A western lowland gorilla has his primary health care team at the Toronto Zoo to thank for finding him the best patient-centered care for his injured foot. Dr. Michael Bushuk, an orthopaedic surgeon from The Scarborough Hospital, performed Sadiki’s surgery on March 25, 2015.
“This is a great example of the community coming together to ensure the animals at the Toronto Zoo receive the best possible medical care. We are grateful to The Scarborough Hospital and hospital staff who provided their expertise on a voluntary basis for Sadiki,” said Dr. Simon Hollamby, Toronto Zoo veterinarian.
Humans are waiting up to 300 days for foot surgery at The Scarborough Hospital. With shorter wait times at the zoo and plans for a new state-of-the-art Wildlife Health Centre, endangered patients might want to consider adding a veterinarian to their health care team.
