Canada’s First Healthy Me Week

Canada’s First Healthy Me Week

My family decided to recognize Canada’s first Healthy Me Week (June 4 to 10) by walking to our local park. According to the website of Concerned Children’s Advertisers, “This week is all about motivating and inspiring Canadian kids and their families to take action on their health.”

Childhood obesity is becoming a big health concern in Canada. With rising health care costs our federal and provincial governments are focusing on prevention. Ontario’s Health Minister Deb Matthews is setting up an expert panel to provide recommendations to the Ontario government so that it can tell people how to best manage their health.

As parents it’s our responsibility to teach our children about the importance of health and making healthy lifestyle choices. We can help them understand that as they grow into adults they will assume responsibility for their individual health. In the meantime, we can take action by providing them with healthy food choices and more opportunities for exercise. I’m all for promoting choice and personal responsibility for one’s health. Now, let’s do the same for health care.

Ready, set, go!
